The Middle- Jimmy Eat World cover by Danny

Standard

Teens at Convention closed our Superhero service with this song accompanied by Tony, Celie and Danny on guitars. Our service also featured the traditional hymn “Brighten the Corner Where You Are,” “Kryptonite” by 3 Doors Down performed by Danny, and original composition “What Have You Done for me Lately” by Celie, and “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers sung by the entire convention. The music at convention was one of the highlights for me from mini-concerts in the lounge to choir with Laurie Turley to performances near the SCYL merchandise to watching Skylor learn to play ukulele, to singing on the train (sorry Kurt…) and in South Station. I feel so grateful to be a part of a group with such talented musicians- thank you!

I feel alone all the time, even when surronded by people,I am lonely .

I can’t bring myself to do anything,I don’t try at the things I love.

Comfort is found so rarely.I always search for warmth and love.

Someday it will get better , and you God will lift me up.

By Chris ,Celie , Becca , Skylor

Thank you God for helping us when we need it.

Thank you for guiding us in times of need.

For , without your light we would be lost.

For without your love we would be missing.

I praise you in song ,my gracious God.

I shout to the heavens with love and thanks.

My Eyes Refuse to open,I cannot wake up.

I am unable to get out of bed,I cannot get up to better your world

I begin to drift off during the most important things. My eyes begin to close when I try to focus .

God support me through this difficuly ,Give my spirit strength.

Sing into the lord all the earth and all the sea all the sky.

Worship him in joyful song come to him with shouts of praise.

Know it is he who created us and he who keeps us.

We are his own,the fish of his ocean.

There are many events that consists of the 2011 winter retreat .Kurt and other staff definitely made this a fun event! We first had an ice breaker. These are my favorites! We all went around , introduced ourselves ,and said our favorite music experience. Then, we made our own musical insruments . These consisted of noise makers, whistles ,and rain sticks. Finally,we all celebrated with a party at the rollar rink ! It was so much fun! I definitely recommend going to a teen winter retreat !

Almont Winter Retreat

I know this is a tad late- but I wanted to get my two cents in on winter retreat and encourage teens to come this year… my last teen retreat.

Last winter, I was mildly stressed about finishing college applications (don’t worry- I did eventually and will be at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington in the Fall). This retreat was a breath of fresh (and chilly) air. My fondest memories include jamming with Paul Demming and teens, Frisbee in the snow, knitting with Holly, rollerskating on the last night, staying awake for 24 hours (minus that hour nap in the middle…), and crashing on coma couch after said 24 hours.

There’s more I could share, but that’s old news. I’ll post about convention soon. Hope to see you all this winter!

Facebook, CBS, and Youth Director blog, Oh my!

Standard

I’m in!

Finally- now that’s summer’s rolled around (and I got some face-to-face encouragement at Convention) I had time to figure out how to post on here- which wasn’t nearly as difficult as I though it’d be. Kurt posted something on our Facebook group that I think is worth sharing on here for those without FB access. We have multiple media sights now and here’s what Kurt had to say about the distinctions between them:

There is a Home Base and there are Outposts. Home Base is where your group, in this case, the SCYL lives online. Outposts are all your other media sights related to the Home Base.

SCYL Home Base:

  •  http://youthleague.blogspot.com This is the home base the where the SCYL “lives”. This is the blog that I, as youth director, administer  and run. Here you find links to all other youth and church media sites, pictures and stories that I write, and a calendar of events. This is where parents of teens and teens (especially new teens and families) might go to find information about the church, the SCYL and upcoming events, like retreats. Now that I know what to do, I will try to do a better job keeping this blog current.

SCYL Outposts:

  • SCYL Facebook group: This is a group for teens, as well as youth leaders and ministers who work directly with teens at youth retreats and camps. It’s a place for teens to share information and pictures with others who are actively involved in the SCYL. This is a private group and adults who are not involved in leading retreats won’t be in this group.
  • This Blog! https://scylcbs.wordpress.com/
This is the teen blog which is likely the CBS printed newsletter. This is the place for teens to share whatever they want. It is for all stuff written and reported by teens for teens. Other than the occasional youth director report or youth chaplain message, it’s just for you teens. But it is an open site that all parents and adults can visit to see what you guys are up to, so nothing overly offensive should go here. But, that said, this is where you can push the limits the farthest. Things you teens post here should be linked back to Facebook, the SCYL page or on your own wall, so more people find the teens pics and posts here and visit.

I’m sure more Outposts will be added down the road as different media sites become more popular. We can add as many Outposts as we like.
